Tides & Moons

Tides & Moons

Setting up your tide clock you will need to obtain your local high tide time for the day of the next Full or New Moon. To get the maximum enjoyment from a tide clock, it is important to observe the following guide.
Please Note: Tides are extremely complicated and Tide Clocks are designed as a tide trend indication, they are not an accurate instrument! [See below]
Information is usually provided by local newspapers, Tide Tables (though Tide Tables may also show inaccurate times due to unexpected variable meteorological conditions) or the Internet.
We think that the website: http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/coast_and_sea/tide_tables/
This offers possibly the best information for tides in any UK location.

Adjust the indicator hand by turning the "adjust wheel" so that it points at the high tide position at the published time of the local high tide, then insert an Alkaline battery.

To obtain the most consistent results from your tide indicator clock, it is important that the initial setting is as exact as possible and then left alone until a new battery is required. - Daily adjustments will cause inaccuracy.

UNDERSTANDING TIDE CLOCKS
Once set, your tide clock is synchronised with the Lunar cycle 24 Hours 50 minutes to the day. The Moon is the major controlling influence of the Earths tides. Tide clocks rotate twice per day approx, 12 hours 25 minutes per cycle corresponding with the two high and low tides of the day.

A full lunar period equals 29.53 earth days, during which time your tide indicator clock may indicate as much as an hour or so out, this is generally only for 4 or 5 days during a lunar period. This is not a fault, but due to the many other influences on Earths tides. Lunar and Solar activity, high and low atmospheric pressures, local and distant weather patterns, wind direction and velocity all these factors do affect daily tide times:-
Tide clocks should not be compared with computer generated daily Tide Tables which cannot take these factors into account.
For this reason tide clocks should not be described, promoted, or sold as an accurate instrument, they are NOT. Xarim clearly state that they can be a useful indication to the state of a tidal pattern for the area they are set and if set exactly as per instructions can be a reasonably reliable guide.
Tide clocks do provide a guide to the tidal pattern for the location it has been set for providing at a glance the hours and direction of the tides, which is all most people need to help plan a day at the coast; that said, they can be surprisingly accurate over a lunar period.

Please Note: The adjustment wheel moves the indicator hand slowly (equivalent to the hour hand on a standard clock).
Some Tide Movements may emit a noisy sound from the gears, this is normal and should not affect its performance.
Tide movements can be affected by temperature and humidity changes.
Before calling after-sales service try removing the battery for a few minutes and wiggle the adjustment wheel forward and back a few times, then replace the battery securely.

The optimum time to set a Tide Clock .
is on the day of a Full or New Moon. For that day obtain the local tide information; this is usually provided in a local Newspapers, tide tables, or the internet, including our own website: www.tideclox.com or www.bbc.co.uk/weather/tides Our website includes the times of the
Full or New Moon, published to help you set it during the a.m. or p.m. high tide for even greater accuracy.

Using the “adjust wheel” at the back of the tide movement, turn it clockwise until the Indicator hand points to the High Tide (12 o'clock position) at the published high tide time. Insert a new AA Battery ensuring it is seated correctly and firmly in the battery compartment.

Understanding Tides & Expectations from a Tide Clock. Earth's Tides major controlling influence is the magnetic attraction of the Moon. A Tide Clock has a Lunar Quartz Movement to indicate the tidal pattern for where it has been set. It is relatively simple and quite an accurate instrument, rotating at 12 hours 25 minutes synchronising with the Moon's lunar cycle.

It must be taken into account that the tides are a force of nature which is affected by many other influences such as Lunar and Solar activity, High and Low atmospheric pressures, local and distant weather patterns. Wind Directions and Velocity will and do affect daily tide times.

The Lunar cycle is also dependant on its distance from Earth; this equally has an effect on the hight of the tides, i.e. Spring Tides. A Lunar period is 29.53 days. During this period a tide indicator clock may indicate errors as much as an hour or so from actual tide times, generally this is only for a few days of the Lunar period. This is not a fault; it is only one of the many factors of nature disturbing the major Lunar attraction: Do not re-adjust after being setup.

The basic tides do settle back and return to be synchronised with the lunar cycle. Tide clocks should not be compared with computer generated daily Tide Tables which like a Tide Clock cannot take the many variable factors into account.
For this reason; we do not describe, promote, or sell Tide Clocks as an accurate tidal instrument. However, a Tide clock, if left alone, will provide a reasonably good guide to the tidal pattern for the location set; offering at a glance the approximate hours and direction
of the tides, which is all most people need to help plan their day at the coast.
